Nowadays, the availability of bearings is very wide, even within the same size of bearings.
The most important criterion taken into account for bearing selection is one that allows the mechanism where the bearing will be inserted in, to achieve the performance required for the bearing life and, at the same time, to reduce or rather remove the mounting difficulties, maintenance tasks, re-lubrication, etc.
Considering this criterion, it is important to mention that the best performances are achieved when the chosen bearing has been designed for the requirements of its use.
Although the following steps do not exhaust the field of information to be analyzed, they show a sequence of items to take into account:
- Know both the mechanical unit where the bearing will be placed and the specifications of operation.
- Have the plans of said mechanical unit so as to study the restrictions.
- Collect data related to bearing operation
o Type of movement, rotating or oscillatory
      o Rotating speed
o Bearing position in the unit configuration
o Conditions of the place where the unit will work, presence of corrosive, abrasive or other materials
o Temperature of Operation. Consider room temperature and that coming from axes or housings at different temperatures.
o Type of lubrication. Whether the bearing requires autonomous lubrication or depends on the lubrication of the equipment; if it requires grease or oil.
- Select the type of bearing. BPB offers resources of the Product engineering area to help you choose a standard bearing or to make a new design, according to data collected above.
- Define the specifications for components surrounding the bearing, axes and housings.
- Specify mounting instructions
